Battle for the Nest

The 7th & 8th grade boys basketball teams will take on Zionsville West Middle School on Wednesday, December 21st in the Battle for the Nest. This big event will allow one school to hold the coveted Nest trophy while also helping support ZMS student, Logan McGovern, who is battling cancer. The Student Athletic Leaders at both ZMS and ZWMS will be selling raffle tickets during lunch on December 19, 20 & 21 and throughout the A game that night for the Free Throw for Free Chicken Competiton. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards the Kidz4Kidz fund benefitting Logan. Tickets are 1 for $1 or 5 for $3. Five tickets will be drawn after the 8th grade A game for a chance to shoot a free throw. Individuals who make their free throw will win Chick-fil-A for a year! Come out and support your team in the Battle for the Nest while supporting Logan!

Don’t forget to secure a 2011-2012 yearbook for your child! They are delivered on the last day of the school year. The book is student designed and includes one hundred full color pages. PACK THE HOUSE-WHITE OUT NIGHT!

We are looking to pack the house and make it a White Out on Monday, December 5 at the 7/8 boys basketball games against Creekside! ZMS students who come wearing white will only have to pay $1 to get into the games. Our Student Athletic Leaders have planned promotions and prize giveaways throughout the game so you won’t want to miss it! This is for all ZMS students in grades 5-8. Come out and show your Eagle spirit! Games start at 5:30pm.
ZCHS Babysitting Service

The ZCHS Student Council is sponsoring a Babysitting Night on Friday, December 2nd from 6-9pm at Zionsville Community High School. Cost is $15 per child for ages 2 through 10. It’s a perfect time to enjoy the Holiday Music Concert or attend the varsity basketball game at the high school, go out to eat or go holiday shopping while the kids have fun with snack, games and crafts. Registration and drop-off/pick-up will be at Door 41 on the south side of the high school building.

Since 1997, ZMS teacher Vince Flecker, with school board approval, has been taking students on outdoor learning adventures. Most of these trips have been to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.
This year we wanted to let committed students choose between two western destinations. The one most desired would be the one chosen for this year’s exploration.
Below are some outlines with approximate costs. Please review, and if this is something you would wish to pursue, come to the informational meeting on November 16th at 7 PM in the LGI.
Destination #1: Rocky Mountain National Park
Travel by van to RMNP
7 night trip
Camping in Olive Ridge Campground
Explore the park by trails to mountain summits
View wildlife, such as elk, marmot and mule deer
Be challenged on a high ropes course or rock climbing
Approx. Cost: $780 Includes most meals, fees and travel
Minimum number of students 8 Maximum 18
Destination # 2: Yosemite National Park
Air travel
5 night trip
Staying in Curry Village Tent Camp
Explore the park. Hike to summits.
Observe wildlife and fauna
Activity to be determined
Approx Cost $650. Fee does not include airfare and meals.

Make your check payable Vince Flecker. Should your desired trip not be selected and you do not want to go to the other destination, your deposit will be refunded.

7th & 8th grade core academic teachers will be in the North Gym and parents may attend either day.
5th & 6th grade core academic teachers will be in the South Gym. Parents should have received an email earlier this week indicating their designated day.
Special area teachers will be in North and South Gyms (art, music, foreign language, PE/Health)

Dear ZMS Parents, Students, and Staff,
Get your pictures in the yearbook! The Yearbook Staff invites students and parents to submit photos for the yearbook. If you’ve got great photos of school activities and/or athletic events, we’d like to see them. Afterall, our yearbook club photographers can’t be everywhere all the time! Help us get as many photos as possible to create a terrific book everyone will want to have. We don’t need ALL of your photos, just your best ones from that event!
Here is how you can submit photos online:
• Go to: http://www.replayit.com/r/
• Go to the top, right corner, and click “Find your school to register”
• Create a login and write down the email address and password and keep in a safe place. You may wish to use your student email adress (first-last@stumail.zcs.k12.in.us)
-NOTE: our school passcode is: zmsyearbook12
• After you have verified your email address, you may start uploading!
• I find it easier to upload one at a time. Please be sure to “tag” the photo with important information like student name, activity, etc.

ZMS Peace Posters on Display!

The seventh graders in year-long art with Mrs. Goodman have been busy in class working on their peace posters. This project is the first one every year. Students are to follow the theme, which was “Children Know Peace” and show outstanding use of composition, creativity, and art media. The top twelve will be on display this Sunday, September 11 at the Fall Festival in Lions Park. Stop by between the hours of 12 and 3:30 pm to place your vote! Winners will be announced at 4pm sharp! This year, they are so amazing. They may make you cry, so bring your kleenex! Congratulations to the following 7th Graders for making the top 12- it was VERY competitive this year!

Students looked at Children’s Art of 9/11 and created their own sketches in memory of this tragic day ten years ago. This collage shows parts of the following students’ work: Maddie Z., Leah M., Claire E., Sydney B., Taylor., Marielle F., Lauren E., Camille N., Alec H., Blake D., Josh N., Megan H., Brynne L., Amanda C., Max B. Tommy B., Jessica M., and Emma O. These 18 were selected from over 87 entries.

School Pictures

The photographer will be here on Thursday, September 29 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. to take pictures of any students who have not yet had theirs taken as well as to take retakes for anyone who is unhappy with their original photos. If you have not had your picture taken, be sure to do so that day so that we can include you in our yearbook, even if you don’t want to order any photos. If you do want to order, forms are available in the front office and should be filled out ahead of time and turned in to the photographer when you order. If you’ve already had your photo taken but would like to have it retaken, please return the original package to the photographer before having your picture taken.
ZMS Artists on Display

Seventh Graders in Art at ZMS will have work on display twice in September in honor of 9/11/01 and Peace. On Thursday, September 8 there will be a Tribute held at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center beginning at 6pm. Peace Poster for the Lions Club contest and “Memories of 9/11/01″ Sketches will be on display. On Sunday, September 11, the top 25 peace posters will be on display from 1-5 pm at the Fall Festival. Come out and show your support for these amazing seventh grade artists! See the attached flier about the events.
Mark Your Calendars for the 5-7th Grade After School Party

The PTO is sponsoring a FREE after school party for all 5th, 6th and 7th graders on Friday, September 23rdth from 2:40-4:30 pm.
There will be lots of fun activities like an obstacle course, a giant slide, a cookie walk, fun music and tasty treats to purchase from the concession stand so be sure to have your student bring some money! Entrance to the party is free; however, we are asking each student to donate a non-perishable lunch or breakfast item to the ZMS Food for Thought program. Ideally, the donations will be something students are able to prepare without adult help.

Congratulations to 8th grader, Brooklyn Farrell, who designed the winning cover art for this year’s student planner.
Approximately 150 students submitted designs as seventh graders and staff and students voted on Brooklyn’s as their favorite!

7/8 Open House-Tuesday, August 23rd, 6:00-7:30 p.m.

The 7/8 open house will take place on August 23rd. We will begin promptly at 6pm in the gym and at 6:10 parents will begin to run through a mini version of their child’s schedule. It is important that parents know their child’s 1st period room number because they will report there after the group meeting and receive a copy of the remainder of the schedule in that room. If you prefer to print your own copy of your child’s schedule prior to open house, please login to your child’s Power School account to do so.
In past years some parents have been disappointed when they arrived half way through thinking that they could roam through the classes, not realizing that they would be following a formal schedule. We are hopeful that this communiqué’ will help avoid such an unfortunate occurrence.
Please know that open house is often a crowded event, and space will be limited. This is true both in the classrooms and the parking lot. If your favorite neighbors happen to have7th and 8th graders as well, we encourage you to carpool. Additionally, our classrooms are only large enough to hold the parents of our students on this evening, so we ask you to please make arrangements for your children, and we apologize for that inconvenience.
