Don’t forget to secure a 2011-2012 yearbook for your child! They are delivered on the last day of the school year. The book is student designed and includes one hundred full color pages. An order form will be mailed home in September and October. However, you can also order online right now at: www.shopjostens.com go to the shop>yearbook>find your school and search zms! Change for Children Update

Congratulations to Mrs. Plantan’s PRT class! They were the overall winners in our Change for Children change drive last week. In total the students of ZMS raised over $4200 which will be used to help brighten the holidays for local families in need.

ZCHS Babysitting Service

The ZCHS Student Council is sponsoring a Babysitting Night on Friday, December 2nd from 6-9pm at Zionsville Community High School. Cost is $15 per child for ages 2 through 10. It’s a perfect time to enjoy the Holiday Music Concert or attend the varsity basketball game at the high school, go out to eat or go holiday shopping while the kids have fun with snack, games and crafts. Registration and drop-off/pick-up will be at Door 41 on the south side of the high school building.
7th Grade Hearing Screenings

All 7th graders and students new to the ZCS school district this year will have a hearing screening on Wednesday, December 14th. Any student with an identified hearing loss will not be screened. This screening is mandated by the Department of Education every year for all 7th grade students and will be repeated in grade 10.
ZMS Students Awarded YAR Grants

Congratulations to the Sit and Knit Club and Girl Scout Troop 1585. Both groups applied for Youth As Resources grants and were awarded full funding for their projects. Sit and Knit’s Bookmark a Difference Project will provide handknitted bookmarks along with a copy of The Hunger Games as Christmas gifts for underprivileged Boone County Middle school students and the Girls Scouts Books and Buddies project will provide a reading club for 30 kindergarten and first grade students at a Lebanon elementary school.
Food for Thought 2012

This PTO sponsored program will provide simple, tasty, nutritious food over winter break for ZMS families who may need assistance. The goal is to provide breakfast, lunch and a snack for these ZMS students and their siblings during the winter break. Food items will be collected in PRT and SOAR classrooms. Each grade has been assigned a food item to donate. Please send foods that will be easy for kids to prepare themselves. Monetary donations are also welcome and will be used to purchase fresh fruit and bread as well as fill any gaps we may have in donated food items. Checks should be made payable to ZMS PTO with “Food for Thought” in the memo. Monetary donations should be turned in to the main office. 5th grade – breakfast items such as cold cereal, instant oatmeal, juice/juice boxes, granola bars, individual fruit cups or cans, complete pancake mix, syrup
6th & 7th grade – lunch items such as peanut butter, jelly, canned tuna or chicken, cammed pasta, canned chili, spaghetti sauce, macaroni & cheese, soup, complete dinners (e.g. Dinty Moore, Hormel)
8th grade – snack items such as fruit cups, pudding cups, crackers, pretzels, raisins or other dried fruit, juice boxes, granola bars

8th Grade Vision Screening

Dear Parents of Eighth grade students;
Section IC 20-34-3-12 of the Indiana Code mandates that schools conduct a vision screening for all kindergarten or first grade, third grade and eight grade students, on an annual basis.
This screening test will be performed in your child’s school on October 31st and November 1st, 2011. Parents will be notified in writing should the test indicate the need for further evaluation by a Vision Care Professional.
Optometrists from our community will perform MCT testing on all Kindergarten children and any new first graders or any first graders that missed the testing in Kindergarten. This is a screening test and is only intended to screen for major defects. Annual comprehensive eye examinations by an eye doctor are recommended in order to fully assess your child’s visual function and ocular health
Eye doctors from Advanced Vision Care, Zionsville Family Optometry, and Zionsville Eyecare have volunteered their time to help conduct these tests for all of your children.

Parent Conferences

Dates: Tuesday, October 18, and Wednesday, October 19
Time: 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm both days
7th & 8th grade core academic teachers will be in the North Gym and parents may attend either day.
5th & 6th grade core academic teachers will be in the South Gym. Parents should have received an email earlier this week indicating their designated day.
Special area teachers will be in North and South Gyms (art, music, foreign language, PE/Health)

Dear ZMS Parents, Students, and Staff,
Get your pictures in the yearbook! The Yearbook Staff invites students and parents to submit photos for the yearbook. If you’ve got great photos of school activities and/or athletic events, we’d like to see them. Afterall, our yearbook club photographers can’t be everywhere all the time! Help us get as many photos as possible to create a terrific book everyone will want to have. We don’t need ALL of your photos, just your best ones from that event!
Here is how you can submit photos online:
• Go to: http://www.replayit.com/r/
• Go to the top, right corner, and click “Find your school to register”
• Create a login and write down the email address and password and keep in a safe place. You may wish to use your student email adress (first-last@stumail.zcs.k12.in.us)
-NOTE: our school passcode is: zmsyearbook12
• After you have verified your email address, you may start uploading!
• I find it easier to upload one at a time. Please be sure to “tag” the photo with important information like student name, activity, etc.
It’s that easy! Submit your photos today! The last day to submit photos is 3/1/2012.

ALEKS Parent Meeting

School Pictures

The photographer will be here on Thursday, September 29 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. to take pictures of any students who have not yet had theirs taken as well as to take retakes for anyone who is unhappy with their original photos. If you have not had your picture taken, be sure to do so that day so that we can include you in our yearbook, even if you don’t want to order any photos. If you do want to order, forms are available in the front office and should be filled out ahead of time and turned in to the photographer when you order. If you’ve already had your photo taken but would like to have it retaken, please return the original package to the photographer before having your picture taken.
ZMS Teachers Discuss Aleks

One of the big changes from last year to this year has been the introduction of the Aleks program in grades 6-8. This program was piloted at ZWMS last year, and in grade 8 at ZMS in the spring, but for most of our parents, the first introduction to the program occured this fall. In rolling out this highly effective program, it occurs to me that I should have done a better job relaying to our school community why we chose this direction, and what our purpose is going forward.
Toward that end, I conducted interviews with our 5 math teachers in grades 6-8. I asked them a series of questions about the program, and I put their responses in video format for ZMS parents to view. If you have a child in grades 6-8, I highly encourage you to spend a half an hour learning about this program.

ZMS Artists on Display

Seventh Graders in Art at ZMS will have work on display twice in September in honor of 9/11/01 and Peace. On Thursday, September 8 there will be a Tribute held at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center beginning at 6pm. Peace Poster for the Lions Club contest and “Memories of 9/11/01″ Sketches will be on display. On Sunday, September 11, the top 25 peace posters will be on display from 1-5 pm at the Fall Festival. Come out and show your support for these amazing seventh grade artists! See the attached flier about the events.
