How to Handle Your Emotions

All of us experience a wide range of emotions in our lives.  Usually, that is a good thing.  Though, sometimes we have difficulty controlling our emotions, even to the point of letting our emotions control our behavior.  Usually, that is not such a good thing.  Here are some helpful suggestions for handling your emotions:

Be honest with yourself

Talk to somebody about your feelings

Do not ignore your emotions, they are telling you something

Find positive ways to express anger that are not hurtful to others

Whatever you are feeling, you are not alone

Ask for help

Dealing with Pressures

Pressures are a normal part of life.  Entering middle school and becoming a teenager brings a whole batch of new pressures.  What really matters, is not how much pressure you have, but how well you keep it all in perspective and handle it.  Here are some positive, healthful ways of dealing with pressures:

Do something else for a while- exercise, read, see a movie, listen to music

Talk to friends, parents, teacher, counselor

Ask for help

Take a fresh look: brainstorm new solutions

Don’t be overly critical of yourself, give yourself a break

Think of your past accomplishments

Think about your good qualities

Learn your limits; don’t take on more than you can handle

February Character Trait

Being a Good Friend

In order to have good friends you must be a good friend.  The following are different ways good friends treat each other:

  • Good friends do not put each other down or hurt each other’s feelings
  • Good friends do not put conditions on your relationship (example I will like you even more if you do this for me…)
  • Good friends help each other solve problems, not tell each other what to do
  • Good friends give each other compliments
  • Good friends can disagree without hurting each other
  • Good friends give each other room to change

On your weekend outings, engage your child in the following questions:

  • What qualities do you look for  in a friend?
  • What does it mean when you hear “in order to have good friends you have to be a good friend”?
  • Some say a true friend is somebody who knows everything about you and still likes you.  What do you think that means?
  • How do you tell the difference between true friends and frenemies?
  • What are the benefits of having friends who are different from us?

How to have a great relationship with your parents

Respect each other:

Without a mutual respect, any relationship will be an unhappy one.  People who respect each other: 1) value each other’s opinions, b) listen to each other, c) disagree without screaming or insults.  Remember, your parents have lived longer than you, don’t discount their experience and knowledge.

Communicate:

Your parents want to know what’s going on in your life.  If you keep them in the dark they won’t know when you need their help or whether they can trust you. Tell them what you’re up to, share your thoughts and feelings with them, and seek their advice for your problems (you don’t always have to take it).  Communication builds closeness.

Build Trust:

Trust is your key to freedom.  The way to build trust is through honesty and responsibility.  Honesty means you don’t lie or manipulate.  Responsibility means you are reliable and can be counted on to use good judgment.  When your parents trust you, it’s a lot easier for them to say “yes”.

How to Treat Others with Respect

November 1st, 2010 · No Comments · Character Traits

Treating people with respect makes your world a nicer place to live in, whether it is at home, school, or out in your community.  It is easy- all you have to do is treat people the way you like to have them treat you.  Here are a few ideas:

Do not insult people or make fun of them

Listen to others when they speak

Value other people’s opinions and ideas, even if it is different from yours

Be considerate of people’s likes and dislikes

Do not talk about people behind their backs

Be sensitive to other people’s feelings

Do not pressure someone to do something he or she does not want to do

We live in a diverse nation made up of many different cultures, languages, races, and backgrounds.  That kind of variety can make all our lives a lot more fun and interesting, but only if we get along with each other.  In addition to the list above, here are some ways we can respect people who are different from us:

Try to learn something from the other person

Never stereotype people

Show an interest and appreciation for other people’s cultures and backgrounds

Attention Students…Do you love to write?

October 13th, 2010 · No Comments · 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade, Academics, Clubs, Events, General School Information, Guidance

Untitled

Attention ALL Students in Grades 5-8:

Do you love to write? Do you want the chance to see your name in print of the ZMS school yearbook? If so, there is an exciting opportunity for you! Please read on…….

YEARBOOK STORY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Stories must be written in journalistic style. (see below.
  • Stories should be written about a topic that is relevant to your current grade level or teachers.
  • Stories should be between 150 and 250 words.
  • Stories should include quotes from at least 3-4 students, both boys and girls.
  • Spelling and grammar should be checked before electronic submission.
  • All writing must be submitted by Monday, November 8.  Please e-mail your document as an attachment to Mrs. Valencourt (lvalencourt@zcs.k12.in.us).

JOURNALISTIC STYLE RULES:

  • Write in Third Person.

Journalists are reporters; correct pronouns are “he”, “she”, and “they”. One exception is when you are quoting someone. You may quote them as saying, “I….”

  • Be Objective.

This is not an opinion based story written by you. Show the opinions of those you are interviewing and include quotes by them.

  • Write in Past Tense.

The yearbook is a permanent record of the year. The book comes out on the last day of school and will forever be a memory of the past.

  • Keep it Simple.

Journalistic writing incorporates simple vocabulary, simple sentences structure and shorter paragraphs. Try to keep your paragraphs shorter than 30 words. It is okay to have one and two sentence paragraphs.

  • Be Concise.

Your goal should be to  record as much information as possible in as few words as possible. If you have more space, add another quote.

  • Tell Both Sides of the Story.

Balance is important in journalism. Do not show your opinion. Include quotes by a variety of people involved…students that are boys and girls, students from different classrooms or teams, and also…get quotes by teachers when applicable.
