Change For Children Volunteers

November 10, 2011 · No Comments · Change for Children, PTO Activities

“Change for Children” is a holiday fundraiser for the ZMS PTO and FUN WEEK where the ZMS students bring in loose change and participate in a fun competition called “Penny Wars” (under the leadership of their PRT and SOAR teachers).  It is an event to support their own peers right here at ZMS.  Money will be collected the week of Monday, Nov. 14th – Friday, Nov. 18th. ***YES*** this is next week!  A class winner for each grade will be announced in the Daily Announcements.  At the end of the week, the class winner for each grade will then win a special treat (still to be determined).  100% of the money collected will be with shared with some of our own ZMS families by the ZMS Guidance Office to help brighten their Holidays.  It is amazing how quickly loose change adds up for this event.  Last year, we raised over $6000.

Here is how we need your help: we are looking for parents to volunteer during shifts from 11:00-12:15 for 5th/6th grade PRT classes and from 12:00-1:15 for the 7th/8th grade SOAR classes.  Our job will be to collect buckets of change from the teachers and assist in counting and tracking classroom totals.  We will be utilizing a coin collector at Bank Ameriana to convert the change into checks to be deposited into the PTO bank account.  Feel free to volunteer for multiple or consecutive time slots.

In order to sign up, please go to the following website:

http://www2.mysignup.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi?datafile=change_for_children

On your scheduled day, please enter through the front/main office, sign in, and proceed to the table that will be set up directly behind the LGI room (next to the mural and near the stairs).   If possible, please sign up this week, so that we can assess our volunteer commitments.

Thanks for your help!

2011 Fall Election Voting information

October 26, 2011 · No Comments · PTO Activities

On Election Day (Tuesday, November 8), Zionsville voters will have the opportunity to approve the following public question:

Shall Zionsville Community Schools issue refunding bonds to refund not more than ten percent (10%) of its outstanding bonds to provide an annual savings to the school’s debt service fund that can be transferred from the school’s debt service fund to the school’s capital projects fund, transportation fund, or school bus replacement fund?”

A new state law allows school districts that have lost the most revenue due to the property tax caps to seek this voter approval. If approved, this meaasure would allow the Zionsville Community Schools to defer a small portion of its debt obligation in the next few years in order to be able to continue to meet current transportation, maintenance and repair needs.

Below is a link to a summary sheet on voting locations (there are only 4) and early voting times, etc.

October 7, 2011 · No Comments · PTO Activities, Uncategorized

Each year the 8th Grade Party Committee sells ice cream sundaes to the students to raise money for the end of the year party.   The committee has chosen one Friday per month to sell the sundaes during lunch.  The sundaes will be available for $1 each and the kids will get to pick their toppings.  The first ice cream sale is Friday, October 14th.

A 10 sundae punch-card is available for purchase for $10 or your child can bring $1 on sale days.  If you choose to buy a punch-card, simply print and fill out the form here and return it with your $10 to the office.  Our committee will hold on to all punch-cards so no worries of your child losing it!  Checks can be made out to ZMS-PTO.  No refunds will be given at the end of the year….any unused punches will be donated to the PTO.  Thank you for supporting PTO and the 8th Grade Party Committee!

camera_clip_art__1Dear ZMS Parents, Students, and Staff,

Get your pictures in the yearbook! The Yearbook Staff invites students and parents to submit photos for the yearbook. If you’ve got great photos of school activities and/or athletic events, we’d like to see them. Afterall, our yearbook club photographers can’t be everywhere all the time!  Help us get as many photos as possible to create a terrific book everyone will want to have. We don’t need ALL of your photos, just your best ones from that event!

Here is how you can submit photos online:
   • Go to: http://www.replayit.com/r/

   • Go to the top, right corner, and click “Find your school to register”

   • Create a login and write down the email address and password and keep in a safe place. You may wish to use your student email adress (first-last@stumail.zcs.k12.in.us)

-NOTE: our school passcode is: zmsyearbook12

   • After you have verified your email address, you may start uploading!

   • I find it easier to upload one at a time. Please be sure to “tag” the photo with important information like student name, activity, etc.

It’s that easy! Submit your photos today! The last day to submit photos is 3/1/2012.

Thank you, and enjoy the rest of the school year!

Sincerely,
ZMS Yearbook Advisers, Mrs. Goodman and Mrs. Weirich

If you have problems, please email egoodman@zcs.k12.in.us

Note: The Yearbook Staff will review all photos and determine final yearbook content. We cannot guarantee that all submissions can be used in the book. We will also share your photos with the ZMS Daily Announcements Staff.

Sandra Graef Music Education Fund Grants

September 26, 2011 · No Comments · PTO Activities, ZEF

Sandra Graef Music Education Fund

Continues to Inspire Young Musicians

The music programs at Zionsville Middle School and Zionsville West Middle School each received an annual award of $1,500 from the Sandra Graef Music Education Fund (SGMEF) to benefit music students.

Sandra Graef was a beloved middle school music educator who lost her battle with breast cancer.  The SGMEF was established through the Zionsville Education Foundation in 2008 upon the request of her husband Rick.  Memorial donations helped to establish the fund which is in its third year of presenting grants to each of the Zionsville middle school music departments bringing the total donation to $9,000 to date.

“As a teacher at Zionsville Middle School, Sandy always found a way to get the most from her students and the students seemed to get even more in return,” said Rick Graef.   “She always made sure that every student who wanted to attend band trips, play an instrument, or take lessons was able to do so even if there were barriers in their way.”

“When we lost Sandy in 2008 I felt that one of the best ways to honor her memory was to establish a fund to continue these opportunities for the middle school students in the Zionsville band program,” he continued.   “The generosity of the residents of Zionsville has been overwhelming and the fund that has been established has touched the lives of hundreds of Zionsville students. Thank you for honoring Sandy with your donations.”

Donations are still accepted directly into the SGMEF and the Graef Family hopes to be able to continue to provide support to middle school music students for many years to come.

“For the past 3 years, this fund has provided ZMS and ZWEST Bands unique and creative means to impact our students,” said Josh Weirich, ZMS 7/8 Grade Band Director.   “The money has helped purchase instruments and music and provided financial assistance for band students to be able to participate in music activities or to be able have an instrument to play.  Both schools have participated in projects with notable composers leading towards new works for band being published and Zionsville students being able to work with and ultimately premier these new works.   This regular donation has helped our band programs not only continue to exist, but also thrive.”

For more information about the SGMEF, please contact the Zionsville Education Foundation at 317-733-3612 or Lynn Kissel at lkissel@zcs.k12.in.us.  Donations can be made online at www.zionsvilleeducationfoundation.org.

90-16 Campaign

May 20, 2011 · No Comments · PTO Activities

Zionsville resident Steve Freeland has launched a fundraising drive to raise more than $900,000 so the planned layoffs for the next school year of several ZCSchools teachers and counselors can be reversed.  “This is entirely about the students and teachers,” said Freeland, CEO of Cancer Care Group, describing his fundraising effort.

The fundraising campaign is titled “90-16,” for 90 days of fundraising to save the 16 full-time-equivalent jobs.  Freeland said he hopes fundraising will top $900,000 by June 30, to give administrators more time to recall the laid-off staff, although the campaign will continue to July 31. He said if just 2,600 families donated $365 each, nearly $950,000 would be raised. The amount would ensure all expenses related to retaining the teachers and counselors earmarked for layoffs are covered.

School Board President Robert Wingerter and Superintendent Scott Robison have issued a statement recognizing the campaign and pledging the funds raised will be used toward retaining the teachers and counselors who have received reduction-in-force notices for the next school year.  Please go to www.90-16.org if you are interested in donating.
